Looking to grow your skills and have a positive impact in your community?

John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) is a leadership development program underpinned by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development.

As part of JCLA, you work alongside like-minded peers in multi-disciplinary teams, and experience the rewarding satisfaction of giving back to the community. You also have the opportunity to develop the skills that employers are looking for in future graduates.

We recently spoke to Marilyn, a current participant, about her JCLA experience:

Why JCLA?

I applied for the JCLA program because I felt it was the next step that would add to my personal development and growth. I felt that if I got in it would really stretch me and was well outside of my comfort zone. I am really passionate about leadership and social impact, and have had a dream about what I want to do when I finish my degree, so it was time for me to build my confidence in articulating and share this dream with others.

What skills has JCLA helped you develop?

I have gained so much – learning about presenting and doing pitches is something I have needed to become better at. Not only did I participate in workshops with incredibly talented speakers, I got to see some powerful pitches from my peers which was really inspiring.

I’ve also learned more about project management, team management, and working with conflict, responsibility and accountability. Working in a team can be difficult and I appreciate having the opportunity to be able to develop these important skills further.

What else have you gained? 

I definitely feel more confident and determined to reach for my dreams. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about growth and development and making a difference in the world has been fantastic – sharing ideas and learning from others from diverse backgrounds and with different experiences has been invaluable. The workshops are well structured and filled with easy to apply information that I will use in the future.

What about future plans?

I have a long way to go before I finish my studies. I am excited about what I am learning and how I can apply it in my own clinical practice one day. I love being able to support people in their growth by integrating their life experiences into narrative patterns that bring healing and empowerment. I know that I have what it takes and am more inspired than ever to get there.

Anything else to add?

I highly recommend participating in the JCLA program if you are passionate about making a difference and learning leadership skills that will get you there. You will learn a lot and it could be the next most powerful step you take towards reaching your dreams. Just do it, the most powerful moments arise from those who have the courage to follow their dreams.
